Gardening

Knowledge and Understanding of the world

After reading and singing along with us, let’s grow lentils or beans or… both.

Your child will need their special binoculars, ask them to look for an old container; it can be glass, plastic, tall, deep, big, small and it needs to be waterproof.

Once you have chosen the perfect container fill it up with cotton wool (children love to play with it, ask them if it’s soft or rough).

Once the ”bed” is made look in your kitchen cupboard for red lentils or kidney beans, broad beans or any other pulses your child would like to grow.

Place a few on top of the cotton wool and water them (if you can use a small spray bottle the children will love spraying their plant every morning when they wake up).

With time see the plant grow and speak about how it sprouts, grows roots, a stem and leaves.

This game is always a favourite across age groups. Children begin to learn the concept of time, how things change and develop, grow a tiny bean into a strong plant. 🌱
